The Forts

A listing of the 51 sites featured in Forts of the Northern Plains.

To be included, the sites needed to be primarily used for military purposes and have some physical remnant to indicate a fort was once at the site, including ruins or an historical marker. A number of sites were not included simply because there is nothing to indicate where they once stood.

Listings include the name of the fort, its years of operation, their present state and the city nearest to the post. For histories of the forts, as well as directions to the sites, a map of the region, historic and present-day photographs, contact information and other pertinent facts, please pick up a copy of Forts of the Northern Plains.
